What if Sally is Constance Field, and/or more probably, what if the Elizabeth you see in Burial at Sea is Sally?
Going through the DLC again today a few things stood out to me that didn’t the first time around.
It all started while watching the ending again.. it didn’t strike me as too odd how the Elizabeth in Columbia is telling you the baby you are trying to pull through is not your child—I’m sure she felt that way about it—but I was noticing how the Elizabeth of Rapture makes a point of saying something similar “She wasn’t yours, Comstock. I wasn’t. Yet you had to have me, didn’t you?”
Then I went back and played through the beginning again and another thing jumped out at me:
After being electrocuted, Elizabeth wakes you and there is this exchange:
"Mr. DeWitt! You were dreaming… You kept saying your daughter’s name, Sally."
“She’s not my daughter.”
At which point Elizabeth looks down and to the side, pausing before standing up to listen to the radio beaming in from Sander Cohen.
Then, when you enter Fontaine’s, when you ask her to call you Booker, she remarks that if it was all the same to her, she prefers calling you Mr. Dewitt. I think it’s fair to say that after the exchange after your electrocution things between you and Elizabeth grow colder, ultimately leading to your death.
Thinking about these exchanges and then watching the ending again, it just seemed so clear to me that the Elizabeth of Rapture was killing you over anger that she felt for Comstock for stealing something that wasn’t his. Then she goes out of her way to say she isn’t yours.
And I thought, well, what if it’s because the Elizabeth of Rapture herself is Sally, posing as Elizabeth?
Maybe Sally thought Comstock was her father, and wanted to reunite the two, but Comstock’s denial of this triggered some kind of realization of past events that led her to conclude that Comstock just stole her?
Then I let my mind wander off track, (this is where my theory slowly falls apart) and thought about Constance Field and how she said in her voxophone that her and the lamb have much in common… Well.. Wouldn’t it be cool if Constance is Sally brought to Columbia by the Elizabeth of Rapture?
In the ending you have a flashback to stealing a baby from your younger self but its not as if a tear was occurring.. You eventually lose Sally whereas the figurative head of the baby, represented by that doll head, falls to the ground. The Sally in this version of reality should be in tact— I’m pretty sure it’s the girl Elizabeth is carrying in the concept art for Burial At Sea part 2— Well I propose that in part 2 of the DLC you are trying to rescue Sally, bring her to the surface, give her a normal life by renaming her something ironic, Constance, being that a constant of this story is that there’s always a girl taken.
It all becomes cyclical and confusing (how can you save yourself?) so thought up a few ideas just for chuckles:
Maybe Sally somehow managed to run through to Columbia during a tear observed by Su Chong.. That might explain her tone of amusement in her voxophone to Lutece when she states her mommy says science isn’t for ladies, as science is for everyone in Rapture.
Alternatively, I though that maybe the original Sally/Constance could be the baby you pull through the tear in the ending sequence flashback. Maybe Columbia Elizabeth is saying that’s not your kid because you are mistakenly pulling Sally through Rapture, mistaking a shaven Comstock for Booker. … Unlikely since last I checked there’s no thunder or rain in Rapture… and… okay, you were just able to pull the head through… but.. Maybe Constance’s head became the prototype handyman! I mean, hey, her voxophone photo is a shot from the shoulders up, so, anything’s possible :D
